Participatient Studies
Patient participation to prevent prosthetic joint infections. A woundcare app with an alert communication on possible wound problems was used during 30 postoperative days after arthroplasty. Patients recorded their wound status in the app and graded the amount of wound drainage on a 5-point scale. Moderate to heavy wound drainage and persistent wound drainage were strongly associated with PJI, particularly in the third week after surgery.[Scheper 2019, Scheper 2023]
The use of a patient-centered app for wound care after arthroplasty has also been implemented in Terneuzen, The Netherlands. Patients and clinicians applaud its efficacy, although formal efficacy analysis is lacking due to constraints in time and funding.
These projects on infection control in orthopaedic wound infections are examples of patient participation with eHealth.
The study of the Participatient project in hospital wards is completed.
The systematic development of an mHealth app to prevent healthcare-associated infections by involving patients: āParticipatientā is described in full here.
The proof-of-concept study assessing the feasibility of the app, is described in JMIR here. For the protocol of the PECCA trial please see this article.
A Smartphone App for Engaging Patients With Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (PECCA): a multi-centre, prospective, interrupted time-series and before and after study.
The final study results are available online at the Journal of Hospital Infection. Screenshots from the app are available below at this site.
